Pray & Give Thanks

Colossians 1:1-14

Greeting

Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timothy our brother,

To the saints and faithful brethren in Christ who are in Colosse:

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Their Faith in Christ

We give thanks to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you, since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of your love for all the saints; because of the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, of which you heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel, which has come to you, as it has also in all the world, and is bringing forth fruit, as it is also among you since the day you heard and knew the grace of God in truth; as you also learned from Epaphras, our dear fellow servant, who is a faithful minister of Christ on your behalf, who also declared to us your love in the Spirit.

Preeminence of Christ

For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; 10 that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11 strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy; 12 giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light. 13 He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, 14 in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.

Sermon Notes

Does someone or something seem unimportant based solely on size and status? Such was the town of Colosse, once a thriving business community had now shrunk to a minor centre. “The church at Colossae was under attack from false teachers who were denigrating the deity of Jesus; they were teaching that He was not actually God. Though Paul had never been to the church itself, he addressed these issues head-on. The nature of Jesus Christ as Creator and Redeemer was nonnegotiable, so Paul wrote to them that he might bring his wisdom to bear on this difficult and trying situation. It was critical to him that this church know God in His greatness and glory, rather than in the deficient view given them by the false teachers.”

– Chuck Swindoll

The letter of Paul to the Colossians is divided into two main sections – The Supremacy of Christ and Submission to Christ.
As we consider the supremacy of Christ, we consider two matters, first, our profession and, second, the will of God. Many times we hear or ask the question, ‘How do I know the will of God for my life?’ There really is only one profession in life – the work that God wants us to do? What that means in everyday life (what we do and get paid for doing it) will differ from person to person. What should not differ is the truth that we are, first of all, to live our life for Christ’s glory and, secondly, we are to share the glory of the life of Christ with those around us. This is God’s will.
