None Like Jesus

Colossians 1:15-23

The Preeminence of Christ

15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. 19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.

21 And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, 22 he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him,23 if indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, became a minister.

Sermon Notes

There is not a square inch in the whole domain of our human existence over which Christ,    who is Sovereign over all, does not cry, Mine!”

– Abraham Kuyper

  • What does it mean that Jesus is the “image” of God? (see Gen 1:26-27; Romans 1:22-23; 8:29; 1 Corinthians 15:49; 2 Corinthians 3:18; Colossians 3:10.) In what ways does He uniquely display the character and activity of “the invisible God” according to this passage? (see also Hebrews 1:1-3, John 1:18.)
  • List some things about Paul’s description of Christ as the “firstborn” in verses 15 and 18...
  • What range of meanings can this word have (see Luke 2:7; Hebrews 11:28; 12:22-23; Psalm 89:27; Romans 8:29)?
  • What is the likeliest meaning of the word in this passage considering the surrounding context?
  • Paul’s description of Christ as “firstborn” both in 1:15 and 1:18 marks 2 different sections in this passage. How does Paul’s description of Christ change from 1:15-18a to 1:18b-20?
