Leading and Following

1 Thessalonians 5:12-21

Final Instructions and Benediction

12 We ask you, brothers, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, 13 and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves. 14 And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle,[a] encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all. 15 See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone. 16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not despise prophecies, 21 but test everything; hold fast what is good.

Sermon Notes

“The very first thing which needs to be said about Christian ministers of all kinds is that they are “under” people as their servants rather than “over” them (as their leaders, let alone their lords). Jesus made this absolutely plain. The chief characteristic of Christian leaders, he insisted, is humility not authority, and gentleness not power.

 John Stott

  • What three things is Paul teaching the Thessalonians about leadership?
  • What is Paul teaching the Thessalonians about following?  What was Paul personal experience with the Thessalonians as far as their willingness to follow?
  • What other leaders can you think of in the Old and New Testament that experienced challenges with those who followed?  Why is it so hard to follow leaders and how do we take to heart the Scripture passage from today?

Scriptures to Consider

  1. Isaiah 41:10
  2. Hebrews 13:7
  3. Galatians 6:9
