Lessons from Jesus
“Walk in Truth – It Is God’s Will”
Scripture Text: Romans 5:1 - 11

Peace and Hope

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we[a] have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we[b] boast in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we[c] also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.

You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him! 10 For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! 11 Not only is this so, but we also boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

SERMON NOTES

  • In Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, he addressed very practical circumstances in life. He addressed issues that the everyday person was facing. He spoke of murder, adultery, divorce, speaking the truth, getting even with someone by whom one has been wronged.
  •  He spoke of love and charitable deeds. He spoke of religious practices – prayer and fasting. He addressed the subject of wealth and of individuals looking upon the acts of others in a condemning manner. He spoke of what we know as the ‘Golden Rule’ and true and false teaching.
  • So why did He give His inaugural address on so many topics? He wanted then (and wants now) that each of His followers live a life of blessing and fulfillment. He spoke of all these matters as introductory to His further teachings yet serve as a resume or preamble thus the first set of powerful truths we know as The Beatitudes.
  • He spoke to give us great hope for a blessed future as we live out the will of God.
  • “The will of God is not something you add to your life. It’s a course you choose. You either line yourself up with the Son of God or you capitulate to the principle which governs the rest of the world.” - Elisabeth Elliot
