Final Words

SERMON NOTES

"“Come, and see the victories of the cross. Christ’s wounds are thy healings, His agonies thy repose, His conflicts thy conquests, His groans thy songs, His pains thine ease, His shame thy glory, His death thy life, His sufferings thy salvation.” wrote Bible commentator Matthew Henry.

Jesus primary role in coming to earth in obedience to His Father was to take the penalty for the sins of mankind. This was played out in His being the substitutionary sacrifice for yours and my sins.

But was this the ONLY reason He came? The answer to that is obviously ‘No!’

Jesus said in John 10:10 in conclusion to His discourse on the Good Shepherd, “The thief does not come except to steal, kill and to destroy. I have come that they may have life and that they may have it more abundantly.”

Jesus commission to His disciples, as recorded by Matthew, was, “...go... and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you...”

Discipleship involves time, energy, commitment of resources (money plus others) on the part of both the teacher and the student.

Jesus exemplary life and teaching tells us much of what is expected of us, His followers, His agents of hope in a broken and sad world.
