Real Power
Act 1:6-11

The Ascension

So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. 10 And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, 11 and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”

SERMON NOTES

“Not called!’ did you say? ‘Not heard the call,’ I think you should say. Put your ear down to the Bible, and hear Him bid you go and pull sinners out of the fire of sin. Put your ear down to the burdened, agonized heart of humanity, and listen to its pitiful wail for help. Go stand by the gates of hell, and hear the damned entreat you to go to their father’s house and bid their brothers and sisters, and servants and masters not to come there. And then look Christ in the face, whose mercy you have professed to obey, and tell him whether you will join heart and soul and body and circumstances in the march to publish his mercy to the world.”Acts speaks much about the Holy Spirit. Why do you think the Book of Acts has such an emphasis on the Holy Spirit?                               -William Booth

  • The disciples were uncomfortable and challenged by the circumstances they found themselves. They desired Jesus to return and establish His kingdom. We likewise, desire in our day for Christ to return and establish his Kingdom. How do we balance the pre-eminent return of Christ and the call to missions (Reach the Lost)?
  • What would it look like if everyone in our Church entered the mission? Who has God placed in your sphere of influence that needs Christ? What is the Holy Spirit asking you to do?
Are you willing to intentionally set time aside to learn to share your faith?
  • Resources to consider include: “Sharing Jesus Without Fear”; “Becoming a Contagious Christian”; Tracts include: “May I ask you a Question?”; “Knowing God Personally”
