Distracted: Acts 6:1-7

Seven Chosen to Serve

Now in these days when the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint by the Hellenists arose against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution. And the twelve summoned the full number of the disciples and said, “It is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables. Therefore, brothers, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we will appoint to this duty. But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” And what they said pleased the whole gathering, and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolaus, a proselyte of Antioch. These they set before the apostles, and they prayed and laid their hands on them.

And the word of God continued to increase, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests became obedient to the faith.

SERMON NOTES

Your call will become clear as your mind is transformed by the reading of Scripture and the internal work of God’s Spirit. The Lord never hides His will from us. In time, as you obey the call first to follow, your destiny will unfold before you. The difficulty will lie in keeping other concerns from diverting your attention.”Your call will become clear as your mind is transformed by the reading of Scripture and the internal work of God’s Spirit. • As the Church in Jerusalem grew, so to did its complexity.  With complexity came the need to care for the needs of the marginalized.  What is our responsibility to widows (or other marginalized people)?  What scriptures come to mind that speak specifically to widows or orphans?
  • What call has God placed on your life?  What are your Spiritual gifts and how are you developing the spiritual gifts that God has given you?  Do you have a mentor, a community of people to strengthen your walk with the Lord?
  • The Apostles looked to the body of believers to find solutions.  They easily could have been distracted from their ‘calling’ by doing good things.  In what ways do we get distracted from our calling?
  • How do you respond to conflict or opposition?  The Apostles rejoiced (Acts 5:40).

    Scriptures to Consider
