Scattered: Acts 8:1-8

Saul Ravages the Church

And Saul approved of his execution.

And there arose on that day a great persecution against the church in Jerusalem, and they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles. Devout men buried Stephen and made great lamentation over him. But Saul was ravaging the church, and entering house after house, he dragged off men and women and committed them to prison.

Philip Proclaims Christ in Samaria

Now those who were scattered went about preaching the word. Philip went down to the city of Samaria and proclaimed to them the Christ. And the crowds with one accord paid attention to what was being said by Philip, when they heard him and saw the signs that he did. For unclean spirits, crying out with a loud voice, came out of many who had them, and many who were paralyzed or lame were healed. So there was much joy in that city.

SERMON NOTES

“We want to avoid suffering, death, sin, ashes. But we live in a world crushed and broken and torn, a world God Himself visited to redeem. We receive his poured-out life, and being allowed the high privilege of suffering with Him, may then pour ourselves out for others.” - Elisabeth Elliot

  • Things are getting pretty heated in Jerusalem. The Council gives permission to Paul to physically threaten the Christian men and women. Why do you think God allows persecution or trials? Are there any benefits of persecution or trials?

  • How should we respond to persecution or trials? What is most difficult for you in the midst of persecution or trials?

  • James 1 teaches us much about trials. What is at the heart of James’ message to believers? What practical advice does he give to us?

Scriptures to Consider

1. James 1

2. Job 23:10

3. 2 Peter 3:8-22
