Fleeing the Command of God

Jonah 1:1-4

Jonah Flees the Presence of the Lord

Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it, for their evil has come up before me.” But Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish. So he paid the fare and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish, away from the presence of the Lord.

But the Lord hurled a great wind upon the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship threatened to break up.

SERMON NOTES

Some suffering is given in order to chastise and correct a person for wrongful patterns of life (as in the case of Jonah imperiled by the storm), some suffering is given not to correct past wrongs but to prevent future ones (as in the case of Joseph sold into slavery), and some suffering has no purpose other than to lead a person to love God more ardently for himself alone and so discover the ultimate peace and freedom. --Timothy Keller

  • What are examples of God’s clear command from His word? Why do we struggle to obey commands from God?

  • Jonah not only disobeyed God clear command he also ran from the presence of the Lord. What hinders you from enjoying the presence of the Lord daily?

  • Nineveh was a wicked city. History tells us of the evil they practiced. How do you understand the grace and mercy of God in the midst of evil? Are you willing to offer the Gospel to people around you that you struggle to love?

Scriptures to Consider

1. 2 Kings 14:25-29

FUTURE DEVELOPMENT UPDATE: Our Sunday School kids raised $11,000 for the future development of their church and in turn, challenged “Big Church” to match their gifts 10-fold before summer. The challenge was for the “Big Church” to raise $110,000 before the end of June.
We are happy to announce that the challenge was met and exceeded, with “Big Church” raising $225,000 towards the project. THANK YOU!
This has pushed our total received and committed to just over $2 million!
We are continuing to raise funds to reach the requirements to proceed with Phase 1. We are still in need of a minimum of $900,000 of cash on hand and $1.1 million in three-year pledges. Please continue to pray with regards to your involvement financially with this project.

THE CHURCH OFFICE WILL BE CLOSED on July 2 for the Canada Day holiday.
