All About Obedience

Jonah 1:13-16

12 And he said to them, “Pick me up and throw me into the sea; then the sea will become calm for you. For I know that this great tempest is because of me.”

13 Nevertheless the men rowed hard to return to land, but they could not, for the sea continued to grow more tempestuous against them. 14 Therefore they cried out to the Lord and said, “We pray, O Lord, please do not let us perish for this man’s life, and do not charge us with innocent blood; for You, O Lord, have done as it pleased You.” 15 So they picked up Jonah and threw him into the sea, and the sea ceased from its raging. 16 Then the men feared the Lord exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice to the Lord and took vows.

SERMON NOTES

So far in the narrative, we see the rebellion of Jonah rising strongly against the Sacred, Sanctified and Specific call of God.

[We do well to remember that God calls us (and I believe that we, as believers in Christ’s redeeming work on the cross and His resurrection, are called by Christ for His service). We all have a unique call from God and with that call comes His unique provisions for the tasks before us.]

On the converse there are many who, after having experienced a period of rebellion, realize the folly of their ways, acknowledge the sovereignty of God and come to him with a repentant heart and seek to put God’s guidance central in their lives and thus enjoy His blessings.

‘Obedience, (as recorded in 1 Samuel 15:22) is better than sacrifice.’

Please note these verses on the blessings of obedience:

  • Deuteronomy 7:12
  • Deuteronomy 28:1
  • Romans 6:16
