Jonah 1:17-2:10

A Great Fish Swallows Jonah

17 And the Lord appointed a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

Jonah's Prayer

Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the belly of the fish, saying,

“I called out to the Lord, out of my distress,
    and he answered me;
out of the belly of Sheol I cried,
    and you heard my voice.
For you cast me into the deep,
    into the heart of the seas,
    and the flood surrounded me;
all your waves and your billows
    passed over me.
Then I said, ‘I am driven away
    from your sight;
yet I shall again look
    upon your holy temple.’
The waters closed in over me to take my life;
    the deep surrounded me;
weeds were wrapped about my head
    at the roots of the mountains.
I went down to the land
    whose bars closed upon me forever;
yet you brought up my life from the pit,
    Lord my God.
When my life was fainting away,
    I remembered the Lord,
and my prayer came to you,
    into your holy temple.
Those who pay regard to vain idols
    forsake their hope of steadfast love.
But I with the voice of thanksgiving
    will sacrifice to you;
what I have vowed I will pay.
    Salvation belongs to the Lord!”

10 And the Lord spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah out upon the dry land.

Why do we pray? (Not an exhaustive list but a good start)

• God hears and answers our prayers. (1 John 5:14)

• God is the One who can save (Acts 4:12)

• When we earnestly seek God, our heart and will aligns with His.            (Matthew 6:10)

• He will provide (Philippians 4:19)

• It is right to pray (Luke 18:1)

• Prayer is commanded (1 Thessalonians 5:17)

• It is sinful to neglect it (1 Samuel 12:23)

• Neglecting prayer grieves God (Isaiah 43:21-22; 64:6-7)

• It is the medium through which God bestows blessing           (Matthew 7:11; Daniel 9:3)

• It is essential to victory over the forces of evil (Ephesians 6:12-18)

• Christ exemplified it (Hebrew 5:7; Mark 1:35)• Emphasis of prayer given to the early church           (Acts 6:4; Acts 12:5; Romans 1:9-10; Colossians 1:9)

• Designated the primary activity of the church by God (Isaiah 56:7)

• To have a relationship with our God (Ephesians 3:14-19)

• To help overcome temptation (Luke 22:40)

• It accomplishes God’s work (John 14:12-14)
