Series: Christians in a Post-Christian Society

February 13, 2022 - If The Lord Wants
How do you know that Jesus is the Lord of your life? As followers of Jesus, His lordship is key to us living peacefully in this world of chaos. Matthew 11 talks about taking on the yoke of Jesus, which he says will fit us well and the weight of it will be light. If we take on His yoke we will find rest for our souls. So, how do you know that Jesus is Lord of your life? Starting with James 4:13 - 17 we will try to respond to this question and give it some context in our lives.

February 6, 2022 - Judge Not ...
This Sunday we are returning to our series that has been taking us through the book of James entitled “Being a Christian in a Post Christian Society”. We started this series back in September, but with Advent, Christmas and a brief series regarding prayer and the Godhead in preparation for our Semi Annual Congregational Meeting we did not finish James. So this morning we return to where we left off, James 4:11, 12. What is the difference between “speaking the truth in love” and “being judgemental”?

January 2, 2022 - Reflection/Calling
This Sunday, we will be considering James 4:1-10. In our postmodern, post christian world of Canada what are the obstacles to embracing a relationship with God the Father and receiving wisdom. Someone once said that humility is the gateway to wisdom. Review the passage and consider how you can prepare yourself to gain wisdom.

December 26, 2021 - Godly Wisdom
This Sunday we return to our ongoing study of the book of James and being a Christian in a Post-Christian Culture. Many in the postmodern world look for meaning and purpose by reflecting on the past to find meaning in the present. Our passage of study this Sunday is James 3:13 -18. Verse 13 says, “If you are wise and understand God’s ways, prove it by living an honourable life, doing good works with the humility that comes from wisdom.” This Sunday, Boxing Day is rooted in this verse, “... doing good works with humility that comes from wisdom.” Two historical figures associated with the Christmas season will be used to guide us in understanding wisdom as it relates to good works.

October 31, 2021 - Actions Speak Louder Than Words
What is faith? Maybe faith is the outcome or result of spending time together with a person. That person becomes a friend, a confidante. Why? Because you see them in action and you come to trust them. You know their heart and you trust their responses to the world around them. When you only read about a person and all the great things they have done, can you claim them as a friend? This Sunday, we will be looking at what it takes to claim God as a friend. Please read James 1:19 - 20.

October 17, 2021 - The Nature Of Temptation
Today we are looking at James 1:12 - 15 and considering the nature of temptation. As the passage says, temptation starts with ourselves. In our post-Christian, postmodern world temptations seem to multiply and the challenge that we face is how do we cope? We will be looking at I Corinthians 10:12 and Galatians 5:22, 23 as we consider how we can cope with the temptations of this world.

October 10, 2021 - Thanksgiving
This Sunday falls on the Thanksgiving Weekend and it is also Communion Sunday. How appropriate. Another name for Communion is Eucharist, a transliteration of the Greek word for Thanksgiving. In the Eucharist we are:
Thankful for what Jesus accomplished through His sacrifice
Thankful for what the Holy Spirit accomplishes in us because of His sacrifice
Thankful for what the Father will accomplish in greeting us in Heaven because of His sacrifice
In preparation for Sunday consider reading: Psalm 118 and I Thessalonians 5:18.

October 3 - When Is Boasting OK?
Most of us have “dropped names” into conversations to add credibility to our story or ourselves. A sly way of boasting about who we know or associate with. But our relationship with Jesus Christ becomes the great equalizer … Jeremiah 9:24 directs us to boast in the fact that “we know God himself”. On Sunday we will be looking at James 1:9, 10 to start this conversation, when is boasting OK? Also read 2 Corinthians 2:14 - 17.
