Weeping Over a City

Luke 19:28-44

The Triumphal Entry

28 And when he had said these things, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. 29 When he drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount that is called Olivet, he sent two of the disciples, 30 saying, “Go into the village in front of you, where on entering you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever yet sat. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you shall say this: ‘The Lord has need of it.’” 32 So those who were sent went away and found it just as he had told them. 33 And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?” 34 And they said, “The Lord has need of it.” 35 And they brought it to Jesus, and throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. 36 And as he rode along, they spread their cloaks on the road. 37 As he was drawing near—already on the way down the Mount of Olives—the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen, 38 saying, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” 39 And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” 40 He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.”

Jesus Weeps over Jerusalem

41 And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it, 42 saying, “Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. 43 For the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up a barricade around you and surround you and hem you in on every side 44 and tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you. And they will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know the time of your visitation.”

Sermon Notes

There are two ways of getting out of a trial. One is simply to try to get rid of the trial, and be thankful when it is over. The other is to recognize the trial as a challenge from God to claim a larger blessing than we have ever had, and to hail it with delight as an opportunity of obtaining a larger measure of divine grace.

-A.b. Simpson

  • Why do you think that Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a colt? How does this show Jesus’ humility?
  • “What a singular conjunction of words is here, ‘the Lord’ and ‘hath need!’ Jesus, without laying aside his sovereignty, had taken a nature full of needs; yet, being in need, he was still the Lord and could command his subjects and requisition their property.” (Spurgeon) Contrast the idea of Jesus in need and the reality of His deity.
  • The crowds are worshiping Jesus as He enters the city. The Pharisees are furious. Contrast the two responses.

Giving Update

COVID-19   Impact on Giving

Churches rely on the generosity of their people to maintain their operations day-to-day. With the widespread closure of churches in almost every city in Canada, people aren't in their places of worship to put money in the collection plate and, as the economy contracts, people will likely have less money to give through other means too.  This obviously poses a challenge for churches to maintain their operations.

Some organizations have rainy day funds that may be used to help navigate through times like these however churches normally do not have this luxury.  Churches rely on the generosity of their congregation's tithes and offerings to keep the lights on, and to support ministry programming. For SGAC our rainy day fund balance is our accumulated surplus of $69,000. With normal budgetary spending this will last approximately 2 weeks.

Since the start of our "Live Stream" services giving over the past three weeks has decreased approximately 50%. The good news is each week more people are moving to on-line and other forms of giving and so the trend has been positive.  Given the current reality the Board has reduced the General Fund budget by 28%.  This takes effect immediately.  This includes the suspension of the monthly $12,000 transfers to the Future Development Fund and spending limited to fixed costs such as utilities, insurance, staffing and other commitments required to maintain basic ministry operations. This change has reduced our weekly requirement from $25,000 to $18,000.  But given this environment, this is not enough.

While the Board is committed, for as long as possible to pay staff, our current projections based on giving during this past week indicate that unless we are able to access government financial aid or giving increases we will need to make significant adjustments in the area of staffing within the month of April.

We would encourage you to maintain your giving to SGAC as you are able. We understand that some of you may have lost your employment and or are experiencing reduced pay but as God enables, we would encourage you to continue to give to SGAC to enable us to continue to reach our community for Jesus.

As the Board and Finance Team continue to monitor the current environment we would ask for your prayers and wisdom as we navigate through this season.  2 Chronicles 20:12 We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.”  Would you also pray that the Government Aide will be approved and forwarded in a timely fashion so that we can continue to move forward with our ministry programs.  Thank you for your faithfulness.

Board Treasurer
