Filled with Wholesome Anticipation – 1st Sunday of Advent

Sermon Notes

Chuck Swindoll wrote,

“The book of Isaiah provides us with the most comprehensive prophetic picture of Jesus Christ in the entire Old Testament. It includes the full scope of His life: the announcement of His coming (Isaiah 40:3–5), His virgin birth (7:14), His proclamation of the good news (61:1), His sacrificial death (52:13–53:12), and His return to claim His own (60:2–3). Because of these and numerous other christological texts in Isaiah, the book stands as a testament of hope in the Lord, the One who saves His people from themselves.”

  1. More than 20 times direct quotation or indirect allusion, Isaiah’s message is mentioned in the Gospels. Isaiah is sometime called the Fifth Gospel. Many more references in other books of the New Testament bear the same messages of Isaiah.
  2. Isaiah appealed to the people to turn from their sin and embrace the Good News of the coming of the Messiah, the Savior of the world. There was hope and healing for a sad and broken people. Jesus Christ is the same, ‘yesterday, today and forever’. (Hebrews 13:8)

As we move into the Christmas season, may we ask ourselves, “What is MY anticipation?” “What is MY Hope?” “What are MY dreams and wishes?” “Are they purely self-driven and self-focused?” “Is MY life and its complexities driven by the commercial attractions and expectations?” “Is MY life looking to Jesus?”
