Receiving the Word in Affliction

1 Thessalonians 1:6-10

And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you received the word in much affliction, with the joy of the Holy Spirit, so that you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia. For not only has the word of the Lord sounded forth from you in Macedonia and Achaia, but your faith in God has gone forth everywhere, so that we need not say anything. For they themselves report concerning us the kind of reception we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, 10 and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come.

Sermon Notes

It is somewhat hard to imagine that a man who was greatly feared is now serving as an amazing care-giver to new ‘baby’ churches and many wonderful people.Acts chapter 9 is a very interesting narrative of God’s dealings with Saul and those around him. Saul’s entourage, Ananias, the leaders of the synagogue, Barnabas and later the apostles of Christ were on a steep learning curve. Acts 9:31 tells us that the churches throughout all Judea, Galilee and Samaria had peace and were edified.Saul (later known as Paul) preached the Word of God.Psalm 119:130 tells us “The entrance of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.”Thomas Paine, a British political activist in the early 1700's said,

Knowledge of God’s Word is a bulwark against deception, temptation, accusation, even persecution.”
