Covetousness

Luke 12:13-21

The Parable of the Rich Fool

13 Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” 14 But he said to him, “Man, who made me a judge or arbitrator over you?” 15 And he said to them, “Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” 16 And he told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man produced plentifully, 17 and he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ 18 And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. 19 And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.”’ 20 But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’ 21 So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”

Sermon Notes

Covetousness is therefore, a sin with a very wide range. If it is the desire for money, it leads to theft. If it is the desire for prestige, it leads to evil ambition. If it is the desire for power, it leads to sadistic tyranny. If it is the desire for a person, it leads to sexual sin.

-William Barclay

  • Why do you think Jesus refused to get involved in the problem of dividing the inheritance? (Luke12:14).  Are there problems that we should not be avoiding?
  • Greed is defined as coveting (wanting) something you don’t have.  Envy is coveting what someone else has.  Be honest, what are some things you have been coveting lately?  How has this affected your priorities and your relationship  with God?  These questions are taken from the following website:  https://cdn.sdrock.com/docs/discussion questions/2012-06-24-suggestions.pdf
  • What are the negative effects of the love of money (Matthew 19:23-24; Mark 4:19;        Mark 10:17-22)?  (This question taken also from above website)
  •  What is the value of your soul?  What is the value of another person’s soul? How can we live with an eternal perspective?
