Freedom

Galatians 5:7-15

Christ Has Set Us Free

You were running well. Who hindered you from obeying the truth? This persuasion is not from him who calls you. A little leaven leavens the whole lump. 10 I have confidence in the Lord that you will take no other view, and the one who is troubling you will bear the penalty, whoever he is. 11 But if I, brothers,[a] still preach[b] circumcision, why am I still being persecuted? In that case the offense of the cross has been removed. 12 I wish those who unsettle you would emasculate themselves!

13 For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. 14 For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 15 But if you bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not consumed by one another.

SERMON NOTES

Christian freedom does not mean being free to do as we like; it means being free to do as we ought.

 William Barclay

  • “If a thing is free to be good it is also free to be bad. And free will is what has made evil possible. Why, then, did God give them free will? Because free will, though it makes evil possible, is also the only thing that makes possible any love or goodness or joy worth having.” C.S. Lewis  How does what C.S. Lewis says about freedom and love relate to our Christian Freedom?
  • How do we use our Freedom as an opportunity for the Flesh? Gal 5:13
  • Why does Paul talk about our freedom in relation to loving one another? How do we devour each other in our lives through our Christian Freedom?
